St Albans Wedding Fair

St Albans Wedding Fair

Monday 22nd April 2013

We took two cars to the St Albans wedding fair yesterday. Sadly we were delayed by a council jobsworth at the outset, and missed the initial rush of people who were waiting for the doors to open at 11 o'clock. The council worker had been given a yellow high visibility jacket, which transformeded her into a power-crazed tyrant; someone then gave her a walkie talkie radio which flipped her over the edge and she was ready to invade Poland! Being a coward at heart, I chose the easy option of ignoring the rudeness and waiting patiently until she eventually deemed it appropriate for me to drive to our designated parking area.

Once in place, we quickly festooned the cars with ribbons and bows and waited for the rush of eager customers. There was a steady trickle of visitors but most of them seemed to be men of a certain age who wanted to talk at great length about old cars and the technical wonders of British engineering in the 1920s. Interspersed with these was a growing number of engaged couples and, as the day wore on, we were enjoying a satisfying volume of serious enquiries. Business cards were handed out left, right and centre and interested parties were encouraged to email their details to enable me to send them written quotes. I am quietly confident that bookings will follow and I think the day will prove to be a success.

We were lucky that the wedding fair coincided with the St George's day parade in the city centre as this drew in the crowds. The stars of the show were sailors from HMS St Albans, who proudly marched the length St Peters Street, flags flying and drums beating. Almost inevitably, the jolly jack tars reverted to type when the parade came to an end, as they invaded the bar at the local Wetherspoons, downing their grog with gusto and noisily making the most of their shore leave. It was all good natured fun and I certainly found it entertaining to watch the proceedings, in between talking to customers.
